Mount Olivet Cumberland Presbyterian Church
"Keeping The Word Alive, Since 1845!"
The History of Our Church

The Mount Olivet Cumberland Presbyterian Church was organized in 1813, just three years after the organization of the Cumberland Presbyterian Denomination in Dickson County Tennessee.  The church was an outgrowth of the revival of 1800 and the Brush Arbor meetings held on the grounds prior to the organization of this church.  The first building was a log structure.

In 1845, the present sanctuary was constructed at a cost of $1,000.00.  The bricks for the church were made in the field across from Highway 126 (Mt. Olivet Road) about 200 yards from the buiding.

The church originally had two back doors and two front doors.  The doors at the rear of the church accomodated the black slaves of the day which had membership of 30.  Later in 1800, the two rear doors were closed and the pulpit was moved from the front of the church to the rear, as it is today.

In 1904, the church which bears the date of 1845, was remodeled with the closing of the two front doors and adding one single entrance.

In 1955, the educational annex was constructed with four Sunday School class rooms, a kitchen, a fellowship hall, and two restrooms.  Another class room was added in 1978.

The property for the church was originally owned by Henry Ewing, who is believed to be a relative of Finis Ewing, one of the founding fathers of our denomination.

Later, Mr. Ewing deeded the property to Mr. William "Billy" Simpson who later deeded it to Mr. John H. "Jack" White the great grandfather of Cherry Lee White Hatcher (wife of former paster) Carlton Hatcher.

Mt. Olivet has a very rich history and is still "PRESSING ON" to do the work of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
